Compression Socks VS Diabetic Socks

Diabetic Socks vs. Compression Socks

What's the difference between compression socks and diabetic socks??

Compression and diabetic socks have different purposes and feature varied design details that provide additional benefits. Diabetic socks are specifically made to help those who are experiencing a range of diabetic symptoms. They have much more mild compression properties compared to graduated compression socks; however, the similarities these socks share are that they can each be prescribed to help treat various conditions. Both offer different forms of comfort and protection, yet they address these symptoms differently.

Differences Between Diabetic Socks and Compression Socks

Diabetic Socks

Are diabetic socks the same as compression socks?

Diabetic socks are specifically designed for individuals who are experiencing complications from diabetes. With issues mainly related to their feet and lower legs, these socks help protect their feet. In addition to helping with wounds or injuries, these socks can also ensure cleanliness.

Key design features for these socks can include fewer seams, temperature control, a looser fit, and breathability properties. A seamless construction helps reduce friction, which results in fewer blisters and ulcers. Temperature control allows the socks to keep your feet warm. If your feet are warm, you’re able to experience better circulation. Unlike compression socks, diabetic socks offer a looser fit. Diabetic complications can result in higher blood sugar levels, which may ultimately lead to nerve damage. While pronounced blood sugar levels and blood flow complications can yield nerve damage, the protocol for treatment is different.

Diabetic socks can also help keep your feet dry. This is important because moist skin deteriorates faster than dry skin. If your skin breaks down quickly, it’s possible that this could lead you to experience ulcers on your feet or lower legs. In addition to protecting your skin, diabetic socks can offer other protection properties in the form of cushioning. People with diabetes may experience less feeling in their feet; therefore, more compression can help resist the pain that may occur from stepping on uneven objects or irritation from rubbing.

Symptoms such as weakness, numbness, and pain caused by the nerves are known as peripheral neuropathy. This sort of nerve damage can occur in the legs and feet for those experiencing diabetes symptoms. There are other forms of treatment for diabetes beyond compression and diabetic socks. However, both  diabetic and compression socks can be versatile for alleviating discomfort properties that accompany these common symptoms.

Compression Socks

Compression socks are more beneficial for treating swelling or circulation issues in the feet and lower legs. These socks are functional for alleviating aches and pain caused by elevated levels of swelling. In addition to keeping blood from pooling, compression socks feature graduated compression levels that can prevent blood from becoming sedentary.

Unlike diabetic socks, which have low to medium compression properties, these socks are much tighter. They’re tightest at the bottom around the ankles and gradually get looser towards the top. These socks are beneficial for anyone with vein complications or those who are experiencing swelling related to diabetes symptoms. However, diabetic socks are more useful for alleviating symptoms related to sores and wounds that are experienced.
