Managing Work-Life Balance as a Collegiate Athlete | Texas A&M

As a collegiate dance team member, it can certainly be a challenge to learn how to efficiently manage performances at sporting events, practices, workouts, traveling for tournaments and competitions, being an active member in a sorority and taking courses as a full-time college student – however, it is absolutely possible! In my 3 years of experience as a member of the Aggie Dance Team, I have figured out that preparation, discipline, and balance will be your best friends for a successful dance and academic career. 


Make a plan! 

Planning entails creating structure outside of your dance schedule, and it is vital to utilize your little free time proactively!


Try setting a time that you will consistently wake up every morning so that you can be productive throughout your day. Waking up before your classes allows you to preview and review your lecture notes and assignments, preparing you best for class. Remember that everyone has various ways that they work most efficiently, and it is ultimately up to you to figure out how you work the best! 

My other favorite tip is to use a paper or dry-erase calendar! Write down all of your assignments and exams on their respective due dates, as well as your dance team responsibilities such as games, appearances, practices, etc. Using a written calendar allows you to physically see what your week looks like and all that you need to accomplish in a timely manner.


Stick to your plan!

Self-discipline is easier said than done, but planning is only the first step of the process, and you need to adhere to your plans in order to accomplish them! 


My favorite way to hold myself accountable is getting out of my house and going to a coffee shop or an on-campus library and treating myself to a coffee while I study and complete assignments. Even better, bring your friends with you, and complete your assignments at the same time together to make the work fun!

When the coursework gets more rigorous and football and basketball season swing into their busiest seasons, it may seem like you are in over your head, but don’t worry and TAKE IT ONE TASK AT A TIME


Create balance!

This has to be my favorite part about being a college student – imagine all of the opportunities and doors that are open for you in your college town to create the life you have been dreaming of. It is full of hope and waiting for you to live your best life! 


One of my favorite sayings is that only you can prevent yourself from truly living. With that being said, be a “YES” girl! Say yes to trying new things, meeting new people, and allow yourself to grow in various aspects of your life. It is crucial to develop a system of support in a foreign place, so be sure to keep contact and spend time with your family and hometown friends first and foremost. 

Understandably, school and extracurriculars can be overwhelming and I strongly believe that taking time to fill your cup will significantly increase your emotional wellbeing and longevity. Creating balance outside of your “to-do’s” will help you learn what you value both in yourself and the people you surround yourself with and allows you to cultivate resilience in hardships and celebrate your successes.

Haley Mundy is a Senior Allied Health major from Deer Park, Texas. She is currently attending Texas A&M University and hopes to pursue a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology after graduation.
