Dancer Nutrition Introduction
with Caroline Lewis-Jones
Hi, my name is Caroline Lewis-Jones. I am 38, a mom to two little boys, married to a wonderful man named Hance, a professional dancer/choreographer, a Certified Holistic Health Coach through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, and I am part of an awesome community called Health Made Simple. I have had the pleasure of teaching on the Adrenaline Dance Convention Circuit for 10 years and going into wonderful studios around the country to teach dance and health seminars.
Many people call me The Plant-Strong Dancer. When I was 23 I started the transformation of living a plant-based lifestyle. I am not the dreaded “V” word (vegan) but 90% of my eating and fueling my body comes from plants: fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, whole grains, legumes, and beans. I love this lifestyle so much and I can honestly say that I feel stronger as an athlete now at 38, than I did in my mid 20’s. Pretty awesome, right?! Between my recovery, strength, endurance, and power, I am finally the athlete that I wanted to be at such a young age.
I grew up in a wonderful home. My parents cooked every night for us and sat down at the dinner table to have a conversation. Even on the nights when I would come home at 10pm, I had a plate of food in front of me and they asked me how my day was. It seems insignificant maybe to some, but it taught me respect for food and family time.
At the very young age of 8, I learned what cancer was. My mom was first diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 8, and for 17 years after that continued her fight and journey. Unfortunately, my mom did pass away on December 19th, 2005, but the lessons and science of the body that I learned at such a young age, have shaped me into who I am today. I was with my mom when she passed away, and I made a promise to myself and to her that I was going to educate and help others on the prevention of disease and moving towards a plant-based diet. From that point on, I was so curious about why people got sick and how I could fuel my body to be the best artistic athlete I could be.
I am super passionate when it comes to all of YOU. I love to dance so much. It truly is the best art form and sport on the planet. However, I also get saddened when I see high caliber, super talented dancers not treating their bodies properly - be it dietary habits or not using the right dance footwear. My goal with this blog is to get YOU excited about taking care of YOU. We each have this amazing beautiful temple, but sadly we just don’t feed and fuel it correctly. My favorite quote I heard someone say one day is, “If you don’t take care of your body, where are you going to live”.
So, “If you don’t take care of your body, where are you going to dance”? These next few months, we will dive into several topics:
- The basic science of the body and how it works
- What power-packed foods to travel with
- Pre- and Post-Food Ideas
- Awesome, yummy plant-based recipes
- And MORE
I am excited for your journey of health, and I promise it is worth it. YOU are worth it.
